Consolidation of Efforts by IGKR and SSUFSCP to Prevent the Emergence of Sexist Advertising

From October 3 to 5, the annual strategic session “Consolidation of Efforts by the Industrial Gender Committee on Advertising (IGCA) and the State Service of Ukraine on Food Safety and Consumer Protection (SSUFSCP) to Prevent the Emergence of Sexist Advertising” took place, organized by IGCA in partnership with FES-Ukraine.

During the strategic session, discriminatory advertisements, for which SSUFSCP imposed sanctions and removal orders, were reviewed. Decisions to initiate actions were based on expert conclusions from IGCA. In total, 119 cases were initiated in 2023, resulting in 293,700 UAH in fines for discriminatory advertising, with 101,000 UAH already paid. The highest number of such ads was recorded in the Kyiv region. Unfortunately, businesses often resort to gender stereotypes and exploit human sexuality to promote their products on social media.

The session discussed the current legislative framework for combating gender-based discriminatory advertising and joint actions to engage new audiences such as bloggers, copywriters, and PR services of military formations.

The SSUFSCP of Ukraine serves as the regulatory body overseeing advertising in the area of consumer protection. IGCA operates under the Ukrainian Marketing Association and is a self-regulatory body of the advertising market, aimed at ensuring compliance with the Non-Discriminatory Advertising Standard, signed by 15 associations, including 7 representing advertisers and marketers. The work of SSUFSCP and IGCA exemplifies joint regulation in the marketing field.

💛💙 We sincerely thank all participants for their productive work and the Armed Forces of Ukraine for the opportunity to meet in an offline format.
