DIRECTORS’ CLUB
The club was created in 2002 to solve the current tasks of the marketing research industry. The first meeting was held in 2002 and was devoted to issues of development and implementation of work standards of research companies. The members of the club (at that time the directors of three leading research companies – Oleksandr Fedoryshyn (GFK UKRAINE), Prof. Mykola Churylov (Socis), Ihor Tkachenko (TNS Ukraine) chose EFAMRO Marketing Research Quality Standards as a basis for developing such a document.
This document was kindly provided to the Ukrainian Marketing Association by Brian Bates, then CEO of EFAMRO, for adaptation and adoption. Work on the standards continued throughout the year and they were officially adopted at the Third International Conference “Marketing in Ukraine”. The importance of adopting such a document was determined by the need for market development through increased trust in the quality of work, the urgency of training small Ukrainian companies to international work standards in the research market. In December 2002, UAM Marketing Research Quality Standards were registered in the State Committee on Technical Regulation and Consumer Policy of Ukraine under the number SOU 91.12.0-21708654-001-2002 “Marketing Research Quality Standards”.
In 2003, at the meeting of the club of directors of research companies, a decision was made to carry out an official translation of the ESOMAR Guidelines and Directives. At the same meeting, a decision was made to recognize them as mandatory for members of the Ukrainian Marketing Association. In 2003, the “Marketing in Ukraine” conference supported these decisions.
In 2003, at the regular meeting of the Club, a decision was made to publish the “UAM Yearbook”, a reference publication that contains information about UAM members, its main projects and activities.
On June 6, 2004, after discussing the issue of improper behavior of some market operators, a decision was made to create an Arbitration Court at the UAM. The judges included leading experts in the field and lawyers of the highest category. The main task of the court is the civilized resolution of disputes arising in the research field.
In 2005, during the meeting of the Club, which later received the name “Meeting on Igorevska”, a number of important decisions for the industry were made. An active discussion unfolded around the issue of dumping and providing low prices in advance in research proposals. The panelists emphasized that this practice leads to a decrease in the quality of the work performed, which harms the market. At the same time, a decision was made to conduct a study of research market turnover. Since 2005, such research has been conducted regularly, which makes it possible to trace trends in the industry. Research data is provided to ESOMAR to analyze industry trends in a global context.
In 2006 (March), at the meeting of the Club, a decision was made to change the admission procedure for research companies to the professional community. To join the UAM from this moment, it is necessary to present 2 recommendations of members, which confirm the professionalism of the new member and his ethical behavior in the market.
In 2007, at the meeting of the Club, the issue that the number of “deceptive” tenders is increasing in Ukraine was discussed. The customer companies announced tenders in order to collect data on research prices and proposals on the research method for this specific situation. At the same time, the tender was not actually conducted, and the winner was not announced. It was decided to develop the Recommendations for conducting tenders in the field of marketing research. The recommendations were adopted at the Industrial Marketing Forum in June 2007.
In 2008, the directors’ club meeting was held at the Marketing in Ukraine conference. The head of the statistics committee of the Qualification Committee of the UAM, prof. Serhiy Solntsev first presented the content of the “Marketing Research Manager” qualification exam to eight directors of leading companies. The content of the exam was approved, the first qualifying exams were held at the Odessa State University of Economics in 2006. The exam was attended by prof. Mykola Churylov is a member of the qualification committee, the founder of the first research company in Ukraine. Today, exams are held in three cities – Odesa (OPU), Kyiv (NTUU “KPI”), Kharkiv – National Aerospace University.
In 2008, at a meeting of the directors’ club, a decision was made to actively participate in the formation of the legislative environment for self-regulatory organizations. In 2008 and 2009, 2 conferences were held, members of the UAM took part in the development of relevant bills.
In 2009, a decision was made to support the publication of educational literature, in particular the Textbook “Marketing Management” (authors F. Kotler, K. Keller, O. Pavlenko) and the Workshop “Marketing Research: Cases and Situational Tasks” (authors I. Lilyk, O. .curl)
Today, the activity of developing and implementing standards of activity in the market requires a new degree of responsibility. We propose the creation of a Technical Standardization Committee “Market, public opinion and social research”, which will mirror the functionality and tasks of ISO/TC 225 “Market, opinion and social research”) https://www.iso.org/committee/324087. html.
